Robin Story - Page 2

• Despite their differences in character they both loved sport, especially Cricket and Football and would play for hours in the back garden and in the main rd. In those days they could play in the road all day and if you saw 1 car it was deemed busy and if you saw 2 then a traffic jam was declared. Difficult to imagine this now in the present climate in which we all live. • On 1 particular summer day they were both playing out yet another Test Match against Australia in the road just outside the house. Robin was nearing yet another Test Century and could imagine the crowd applauding every shot he made. He would throw the ball against the garden wall and would play the ball as it came back pretending it was either Ray Lindwall or Keith Miller bowling to him. On this particular day Robin hit a superb off drive and the ball hurtled towards the boundary. In his head the crowd were applauding such a majestic shot but disaster was about to strike. His Brother said that on this occasion he hit the ball rather too well. The ball crashed into the boundary rope which in this case was the pavement curb, flicked up and went straight through the front living room window. The roar of the Test Match crowd was quickly replaced by the shouting and screaming of his Mother who quickly recalled him and sent him back to the pavilion (alas his bedroom) for the duration of the day with his little Brother looking on. The Test Match was abandoned on interference from Mother. • Needless to say boys will be boys and both had their fair share of miss-haps but on the whole they were pretty well behaved. They both went to Church as their Parents were both heavily involved with the Church in Old Weston.
