Robin’s ambition was to be a Pilot in the Fleet Air Arm which was and still is the elite of the elite of the RAF. He applied and was duly invited along for the rigorous 2 days of tests. He passed all the exams and physical tests with flying colours but he unfortunately failed the medical. That flick in the eye from a cows tail all those years earlier had come back to haunt him. His eye sight was perfect but the eye that had been flicked had caused the pupil of the eye not to be quite circular and this is what he was failed on • This was a big blow for Robin and all of a sudden he was faced with searching for a new career, something that he had not considered. • He eventually chose a career in Mechanical Engineering and embarked on a 4 year sandwich course with W H Allen of Bedford with who he was to remain all of his working life. Whilst serving his Engineering Studentship he was awarded the National Diploma Prize of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. This prize was one of no more than 6 awarded annually to those of the 500 odd entrants who pass the Higher National Diploma examination. He also received a prize for the Mechanics of Fluids which also a very sought after national prize. • Whilst all this was going on he went to a School Reunion and it is at this reunion that his relationship with Thelma was re-kindled. This of course blossomed and they were married in 1961 and set up home at 16 Springfield Drive, Bromham which has remained the family home ever since. • They both settled down and soon got involved with many local activities within the village, Thelma with the church and as we all know was Church Warden here for 25 years. She was also a local Primary School Teacher. Robin did not miss his opportunity and was very much involved with the local School PTA and was heavily involved with for many years. They were also involved with many other activities in the village. The sporting activities that Robin was so active in in his bachelor days now took a back seat as he concentrated on being the Family man which was very typical of him as he put others first before himself.
